Every day when you wake up in the morning you get a chance to make something.
Let’s keep things simple - you only have two options:
You can make excuses.
Or, you can make it happen.
What’s it going to be today?
“It’s just calories in vs. calories out!”
That’s what you will often come across for losing body fat.
At the highest level, it is that simple. That calorie math is basically just an algebra equation.
Your body is not that simple though.
When you break that equation down further, each side of it (calories in & calories out) turns out to be more like advanced calculus.
The fundamentals of how the body functions apply to everyone, however, there are plenty of attributes and preferences that make each of us unique.
You’re going to have to figure out that advanced math out for yourself.
It’s hard, and often doesn’t make sense. Kind of like calculus class.
But you needed to get through it anyway to graduate.
So, do it again.
This time your life does actually depend on it.
Think of what a mountain range looks like in your head.
That image should have a bunch of peaks, which is what we think about first when we picture a set of mountains.
How do you identify those peaks, though?
By the valleys next to them.
Anything challenge that’s worth doing, like scaling a mountain, will have its ups and downs just like those peaks and valleys.
You should be looking forward to those valleys - the challenges - since that’s the only way you will truly appreciate getting to the top.
What are the mountains in your life going to be?
Anyone who knows about the 6 Million Dollar Man can tell you the show’s catchphrase “We can rebuild him; we have the technology.”
What many people don’t realize is that their body is constantly rebuilding itself.
If you were to dig deeper into this you will probably come across the notion that your body is “fully” rebuilt every 7 years or so.
Not everyone is aligned on that concept, but pretty much every cell in your body does have a lifespan and will get replaced.
Some in a matter of days, others in a year or longer.
So, what’s getting used to rebuild those cells?
If your diet is junk, well that’s basically what you will be made of.
Or, you can feed yourself quality nutrition consistently and then give your body ample time to rebuild itself the way it deserves to be.
You can rebuild you; You have the technology; And access to quality foods.
The Chinese seem to have the best idioms.
If you don’t know the actual definition of an idiom, I had to look it up too - so don’t feel so bad.
One that I came across recently is “constant dripping of water wears away the stone.”
If I gave you a cup of water and a large stone and told you to use the water to cut through the stone, you’d tell me it’s not possible.
Maybe not with just that one cup of water, but with enough of them over time, it can be done. (see: Grand Canyon.)
Many people who have to make major changes to their health and bodies don’t see the canyon they can carve out over time.
Instead, they focus on quick wins and if the results don't come fast enough, they give up.
Another way to represent this idiom in a word is “persistence.”
You don’t know how many cups of water it’s going to take to cut that stone.
Could be one hundred or hundreds of thousands.
Persistence is the only way to figure that out.
Is what Google will return to you if you search for “how to get healthy.”
So when someone says “But, I’ve tried everything” the truth is they really haven’t.
Sure, not every approach will work for you.
It may take several, maybe even dozens, of approaches before you finally get the one that works for you.
But it only takes that one.
And only you can find it.
How many of the 1,620,000,000 Google results you go through and try out is up to you.
Don’t fool yourself into thinking you’ve tried them all.
Instead, try the next one.
That was the tagline for Verizon’s ads for many years.
Then that guy went to Sprint.
As a loyal Verizon customer, I will not comment further on my feelings towards him.
Anyways, when people ask me for recommendations on how to take better care of themselves I simply reply with the 5 daily habits of the GetFitFormula.

The first one is “mindfulness,” which is all about improving the link between your brain and your body.
What it mainly boils down to is having a good hormone balance.
Hormones are basically chemicals your body uses as “signals” for your various organs and tissues to take certain actions.
If your hormones are out-of-whack, that’s like when a cellular network is having issues such as outages or too many people using the same tower.
Everyone’s experienced issues with their cellphones at some point and know how frustrating that can be when you can’t properly make phone calls, text, or post on the ‘Gram.
Similarly, if your body is experiencing internal communication issues, it’s not going to function as expected - which is also frustrating.
So, can you hear me now?
In a recent episode of one of my favorite podcasts, called “The Secrets to Success,” they dropped a line I really like:
The impact of finishing is greater than the excitement of getting started.
Things that are new, with their unknown outcomes and limitless possibilities, are always exciting at the start.
That excitement quickly fades when things get tough and reality sets in.
When it comes to your health, excitement doesn’t really get you that much.
Excitement is signing up for a gym membership or trying on some fly workout gear.
Excitement is thinking about what you will look and feel like after going through a new nutrition plan.
But, excitement is not what keeps you meal prepping on week 47 or not missing a scheduled workout in 6 months.
It’s finishing the previous goal or activity and moving onto the next one that ultimately leads to the impact you want so badly.
There’s no need for any excitement because finishing just becomes a part of your life.
The weekend is over, and you overindulged.
You fell off the wagon again with your nutrition plan, skipped all your workouts, whatever.
It felt like the right thing to do in the moment, but now that it’s Monday you don’t feel so great about those decisions.
Now is the time when you say “screw it, I might as well stay off track since I already ruined my progress”, right?
That’s the mentality of someone who was doomed to keep chasing the wagon, getting on, and falling off repeatedly.
A couple of days is not going to make that much of a difference, so pick up right where you left off.
Focus on the overall trend.
So, let the wagon roll on its own.
It’s better for you to start walking more anyways.
Sundays can be a tricky day for many people.
They are staring a whole new week in the face, like a fork in the road.
This fork can be great or terrifying.
It’s great when you see the opportunity to keep making progress towards your goals, and you have a whopping seven days planned out on how to do so.
Terrifying when you feel that you are about to let yet another week pass by and end up in the same place.
Not everything that happens during this upcoming week may be in your control.
Fortunately, the decision on what will be in your control this week is yours to make today.
